It is time for Canada's geothermal industry to insist that its technology be taken seriously. Natural Resources Canada and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (among others) have concluded that geothermal heat pumps are the most cost-effective and environmentally-benign space conditioning technology.

The industry group, Earth Energy Society of Canada, produced a report for the David Suzuki Foundation that explained how a GreenTherms Standard for new residential construction in Ontario could avoid the combustion of 1 billion m3 of natural gas a year by 2020.

The Green Heat Partnership reports that CO2 emissions from all coal-fired power generating plants in Canada are lower than the national emissions from space conditioning (applications that can be met by geothermal heat pumps, solar thermal and bioheating).
