Geothermal heat pumps (also called earth energy systems) are designed to provide up to 100% of space heating & space cooling for a building (residential or commercial) as well as 100% of its demand for water heating.
Heat pumps do not produce heat; they simply transfer solar warmth from the surrounding ground into a building. For cooling, the process is reversed.
Heat pumps require electricity to operate but a COP of 3 (Coefficient Of Performance) requires a unit to provide 3 units of heat for every unit of power consumed. Many units on the market can reach a COP of 6 under optimal conditions.
